Most commonly, Botox ® is used to smooth frown lines between the eyebrows (vertical lines) and on the forehead (horizontal lines). It is also used to relax crowsfeet, 'bunny crinkle' lines on the sides of the nose, vertical neck bands, and for an eyebrow and mouth corner lift.
It is an injectable substance derived from a purified protein. It has been used widely for cosmetic relaxation of wrinkles for more than 29 years. Prior to that, it was used for the medical treatment of strabismus (eye squint) in children and for blepharospasm (spasm of the muscles that close eyelids) in adults. Botox is now widely used to treat migraine headaches as well as cerebral palsy children (to relax the overly tense leg muscles that hamper their ability to walk). Its medical use is constantly expanding.
In experienced medical hands, Botox is completely safe. Dr. Lozinski has been using it as a cosmetic treatment for more than 12 years and is a leading injector of Botox in Canada.
Botox in not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers, or people with myasthenia gravis or other neuromuscular diseases.
Dr. Lozinski uses exceptionally small medical needles, which result in a much more comfortable injection and highly accurate syringes for precise treatment. Icing immediately before, and a neck massage during, injection makes the procedure even more tolerable.
In experienced hands, such as Dr. Lozinski's, the effect is a natural appearing relaxation. Only the muscles that create dynamic wrinkles are treated, leaving the other facial muscles unaffected. Sensory nerves do not respond to Botox, so that treated sites retain normal sensation.
Pressure is applied immediately after each injection to prevent bruising. Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil should be avoided for 2 weeks prior to treatment to avoid bruising as well.
With the first treatment, effects are usually noticed in 7 to 10 days sooner with
subsequent injections.
Significant smoothing is seen after a few weeks of decreased wrinkling action longer
if the lines are much deeper.
If the frown lines between your eyebrows are particularly deep, Dr. Lozinski will
recommend a 'filler substance' (i.e., Juvederm)
as a second step after adequate Botox relaxation has been achieved. If Botox treatments are
repeated at the recommended intervals, the filler may easily last a year. By relaxing the
muscles that counter the effect of certain treatments, the results
can be greatly enhanced by the addition of Botox.
For example, filler (Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane) volumization and
Thermage results are better in conjunction with Botox.
Most people need re-treatment in 4 months... some 3 months. A very few lucky individuals may notice an effect for up to 9 months. Keep in mind that if you allow the Botox effect to wear off for some time, it may take many weeks to achieve maximum smoothness again. If is therefore better to repeat Botox when the muscle is just starting to contract.
Botox can be very useful for people who find antiperspirants insufficient. Some find it helpful for sweaty palms.
